Kid Sister Hits The ATL, Hard.

At the start of 2007 Melisa Young was on public aid, working at a baby clothes store and tending bar at a reggae club. Fast forward 18 months and she’s collaborated with Kanye West, A-Trak, Diplo, Infamous, David Banner, Estelle, had features in Spin, i-D, W, Flaunt, The New York Times (among countless others) and been nominated for a best female rapper BET award. All of this on the eve of her debut record Ultraviolet.

Kai Lin Art gallery in ATL presents…MONSTERS, opening July 16, 2010…
Gallery owner, Yu Kai, answered a couple of my questions on the exhibit:
-What made you think of this theme for an exhibit? How did you get all these artists under this team? How was the search for it?
The theme of this exhibit stemmed from my love of MONSTERS and happy MONSTERS from my youth. I’ve known many illustrators that are local and wanted to create a show around all local illustrative artists. They are all friends of mine or friends of friends. The search was easy and fulfilling.
-Who is your favorite artist in this exhibit, and why?
All of the artists offer such a unique outlook on their interpretations of monsters, it’s difficult to choose a favorite.
-There is this fascination with monsters (e.g. Lady GaGa’s “little monsters”) in today’s pop culture…what seems to be your fascination? What drew you to it?
My fascination with MONSTERS stems from a place in each of us that has fears and trepidations and how we overcome our childhood fears through facing our own monsters inside. What draws me to Monsters is the whimsy, the intrigue, the mystery surrounding the unknown.

James Madison Turns 50

So you’re thinking of getting your hair did done. Well gurrrrl, get ‘er done with true Midtown flair! Take the time to traverse down Peachtree and treat yourself to the best of the best at James Madison salon. Named “Best of the South” by Harpers Bazaar and “Best Color Salon” by Elle Magazine, as well as the official hair salon of Cirque de Soleil(!!), James Madison displays true innovative style: “The color of fashion – multidimensional or monochromatic – flows from this team’s technical brilliance and imaginative designs.”
And, if you were lucky enough to stop by last Saturday for the celebration of head honcho James’ 50th birthday, the salon pulled out all the high cards, including a home-cooked buffet bar, sangria and pear mixers, and a mammoth, all-you-can-eat sushi platter. Not to mention the additional appearance of Oh Snap Kid and one of his infamous photobooths (and an intern who quickly took that platter down).
Basically, we leave you with this: “Do not expect just another salon, expect an experience.”

It’s an oven in Atlanta right now. So local ATL-iens know it’s hard to stay stylish while avoiding the heat and the things it may cause [ie. pit stains, back sweat]. Well take note from Sarah M., 22 from Denver CO and recent GaTech grad., she knows how to keep it cute while still keeping it cool.
