“I know we suffer for fashion or whatever”

Posted: under Music.

ofmontreal6

Those were the words sung by beloved Athens band Of Montreal at Refinery29’s fashion week bash as hundreds of style-obsessed fans danced along at Santos Party House in Manhattan. Always coming up with interesting new looks, Of Montreal didn’t disappoint us with their fashion week attire.

ofmontreal8

Lead singer and overall creative mastermind Kevin Barnes showed off his glam rock taste in sparkling blue eye makeup, a military style jacket, and one of the biggest trends of the season: over-the-knee boots. Only the talented Mr. Barnes can look this good wearing multiple shades of powder blue. The guitarist on the right looks like he raided Steven Tyler and Sonny Bono’s closets, but it was an excellent match for the psychedelic stage background.

ofmontreal9

Groups of bizarrely costumed dancers accompanied the band including this mysterious character, who jumped on stage dressed in a black body suit with only a crystallized eye covering midway through the show. After a week of witnessing eccentric fashion, this ensemble didn’t seem that out of the ordinary. If this chick thinks that she’s suffering for fashion, she should try dancing around in five inch heels!

Georgia May Jagger’s Sexy Genes

Posted: under Beauty, Designer, Style Icon, Trends.

Mick Jagger has been with some foxy women, so it should come as no surprise that he has extremely beautiful offspring. Following in big sister Elizabeth’s footsteps, 17-year old Georgia May has begun a modeling career. Perhaps the new Brigitte Bardot, it looks like she is getting plenty of satisfaction building her portfolio. Catch the honky tonk woman as she poses as the new face of Hudson Jeans:

On the streets for fashion week: Part Two!

Posted: under Street Style.

It’s difficult to pick an original outfit for every day of fashion week, but some people handle the task quite naturally.

fw3Take these three pretty girls for example, each looking extraordinarily hip at the Shipley & Halmos Spring 2010 presentation at Milk Studios.

fw2So what do you get when you combine a fashion publicist and two fashion designers? Lots of creativity, and a trio of amazing shoes!

fw4These girls were spotted en route to another after party in the meatpacking district. We love how fierce and upscale they both look while also being confident and approachable.  The lady on the left knows how to rock some shoulder pads and her friend pulls off tout noir like a pro.  If dressing for fashion week was a sport, these girls could be gold medal champions.

On the streets for fashion week: Part One!

Posted: under Street Style.

Beautiful and creative people filled the streets of New York during fashion week looking their best at runway shows and endless after parties. Although our heads are still spinning from the whirlwind of styles, we have chosen a few of our favorite looks for your viewing pleasure.

fw1This dynamic duo was flaunting their stuff during the G-Star Raw after party at the Bowery Hotel.  The foxy girl on the right knows how to make a killer impression in a hot pink bra top and leather booties with inverted metal heels (you go girl).  The dashing man on the left turns heads with a sleek blue blazer and contrasting pink accessories. It’s a fashion match made in heaven.

fw5These two divas also caught my eye at the G-Star Raw after party with their feminine style and vintage flair. The lovely makeup artist on the left shows off her cosmetic skills and super tan gams in a sexy black lace dress.  The lady on the right (aka singer/songwriter Darling Cait) looks fabulous in vintage gloves, a short red leather jacket, and trousers with satin stripes.  In a crowded room full of beautiful people, a little personal style goes a long way.

Schmatta: Rags to Riches to Rags

Posted: under Fashion News, Historical, Movies.

First, there was “Valentino: The Last Emperor,” now, “The September Issue” — clearly, fashion documentaries are the vogue thing to do. Next to follow this trend is HBO,  who is presenting Marc Levins’s documentary “Schmatta: Rags to Riches to Rags” that shows the gritty side of glam by going behind-the-scenes of New York City’s garment district. (“Schmatta” is Yiddish for rags.)

Starting with the history of the neighborhood, the documentary traces New York City’s rag trade from it’s boomtown past to the present. What was once the heart and soul of the fashion industry for many decades, is now in danger of disappearing.
According to Levin, ”‘Fashion, and the culture of consumption, and shopping have been so much a part of who we are that this will hopefully be a way of looking in the mirror and reevalutating, ‘How do we look?’”

Premiering today in Toronto, “Schmatta” will air Oct. 19 on HBO.

Gossip Folk

Posted: under Collaboration, Designer, Television.

Target has a great reputation for collaborating with big name designers to deliver cutting edge fashion at affordable prices.  Currently Anna Sui joins the team with her new ultra-hip collection inspired by the hit show Gossip Girl.  The pieces look surprisingly like what you might find in the Upper East Side, aside from a few hapless items including a shirt that says BFFLWHLAGSAL: Best Friends For Life Who Have Lunch and Go Shopping A Lot (wtf, Anna?). After selling like hotcakes at a pop-up concept store in Soho last week, the collection is now for sale at Target stores and on the store’s website, although many items have sold out after only one day.  I guess that’s what happens when you combine a hit show for teenagers with a massive marketing campaign.  Visit www.target.com to view the entire collection.  In the meantime, check out some outfits….

Floriated Fashion

How much do you love the Earth? Enough to wear it? Weedrobes is a series of ephemeral sculptures by artist/designer Nicole Dextras, whose intention is to “link our bodies and the environment.” These eco-wearables are made from live plant materials such as leaves, flowers and branches. Thankfully you don’t need to have a green thumb to enjoy these garden masterpieces. So, go ahead and satiate your appetite with these delectable duds:

La Dolce (& Gabanna) Vita

Posted: under Fashion Formula.

As New York Fashion Week quickly approaches this Fall, we are finally able to wear those autumn pieces shown last Spring.  One collection that comes to mind is the Dolce & Gabbana Fall 2009 ready-to-wear show inspired by the likes of Marilyn Monroe and Elsa Schiaparelli.  The show featured surrealist elements on exaggerated silhouettes making for quite the glamorous showcase.  Although each look was truly distinctive, I couldn’t help but be reminded of some old familiar characters….
