Fashion’s Invisible Man: Martin Margiela

Posted: under Designer, Fashion Innovation.

Martin Margiela is perhaps the most underexposed designer in the world of contemporary luxury fashion — and that is no accident. He deliberately carries a theme of anonymity by using blank labels,  categorizing his collections by numbers, and even sending his models down the runway in veils and masks. After graduating from the Antwerp’s Royal Academy of Fine Arts and  working underneath Jean Paul Gaultier Margiela launched the his own brand, which sees everyday items from unique perspectives.

Go Go Mighty Morphin Power Rangers!

Posted: under Television.

american-apparel-new-ads

American Apparel generates a “uniquely ordinary” appeal and advertises with some rather racy pictures. You want to purchase those useless spandex leggings and neon body suits because it has been ingrained in your head since the dawn of 1993. The style of the forerunners of omega mystic force awesomeness can be recreated in one single visit to American Apparel. If the Power Rangers are your thing, this is a look worthy of rocking your subliminal racial profile (racism in the Power Rangers).

If you’re feeling a little racy, indulge yourself is some spandex galore: http://store.americanapparel.net/.

Just remember, most of the interesting American Apparel pieces only look good on 0.0000001% of the population. Take caution, especially when it comes to neon pink body suits.

Boldly going where fashion has never gone before

Posted: under Movies, Television.

Mankind has not been the same since Trekkie fashion has entered the galaxy. The quirky characters, monochromatic ensembles, and space age polyester make for an original look. No matter your species, The United Federation of Planets allows us to reflect upon the awesome futuristic fashion that came from the epic series. Put Scotty on speed dial, beam yourself up, and check out the final frontier:

uhura comparison

As the chief communications officer under Captain Kirk, Uhura contributes brains and beauty to the USS Enterprise. The original character played by Nichelle Nichols made space travel sexy, and in 2009 Zoe Saldana follows in her footsteps.

Claire

Demonstrating that the more adventurous outfits are not restricted to deep space, actress Claire Merry arrives for the UK premiere of JJ Abrams’ new Star Trek movie.

Michael

Botox wasn’t approved by the FDA in 1966, so the Klingon Starfleet officer Worf did with what he had. His use of bright color and chain work gives this Trekkie a sense of style.

Man Bags

The original Hansel and Derek Zoolander, Kirk and Bones took space age fashion to new light years. Let us credit them as the manbag wearing really really ridiculously good looking duo.

All Day I Dream About Style: Jeremy Scott for ADIDAS.

Posted: under Fashion Formula.

If you think athletic wear is limited to spandex shorts and polyester jump suits, you probably haven’t seen the outlandish creations made by American designer Jeremy Scott for Adidas.  Although the collection may not be completely suitable for sports, the designs certainly make a statement on the street.  Each piece is a unique mix of art and athletics that include elements of everything from formal wear to wild animals. My personal favorites are these flashy metallic sneakers that bring a whole new meaning to “fly kicks.”

Do you yearn for yards of yarn? Do you have a hankering for handling hooks?

Behold Mandy Greer, a transcending artist on infinite levels. She creates larger than life installations that convert ordinary spaces into magical works of art. The kicker is that it is all done with nothing-like-yo-grandma’s crochet. She transforms a room with an excessive amount of crocheted, knitted and sewn fabric. These creations go beyond reality by mimicking theatrical illusions and tapping into our collective human mythology.

This magnificent gown was constructed from many thousands of yards of crochet for the Ian Lucero film “The Silvering Path”  based on the life of a “Slug Princess”

Here is The 2004 installation project entitled “Wolf Prince and the Parrot Princess.” In their original incarnations, these pieces—a white rag rug and a chandelier comprised of a multitude of pom-poms—that harmonized oddball objects into a fantasy-like space:

Bodily fluid output becomes the physical marker of the  inner life. ”Dare alla Luce”—  ”to give to the light“  is currently on display at the Museum of Contemporary Craft in Portland.

Red Luce

Her aim is to “wrap around and contain many paradoxes; the collusion of homeliness and glitz, hunger and indulgence, love and violence, the decorative and the meaningful, the diligence of the handmade and slovenliness of the animal realm. Every surface is laced with the hope that exhaustive labor holds the transformative power of Spectacle.”

She truly puts the art into artist. Feel free to gawk at her talent and creativity: www.mandygreer.blogspot.com.

“Everything is illuminated by the aura of nostalgia”- Milan Kundera

Posted: under Environment.

Some things in this world are so simple and so strangely beautiful that it makes you stop in your tracks and take a longer look.  This is exactly how I feel every time I pass the circular light reflections on the old Foster’s building on Jackson St. in Athens, GA.  It’s the only place where I have ever found such ghostly ringlets. They seem to intentionally adorn the brick wall with their mysterious light.  I’m not sure if anyone else would appreciate it as much as I do, but I have had a certain fondness in my heart for this sight for years. It decorates the city amongst a sea of dark brick buildings and only illuminates for a period before sunset.  Like the city itself, it’s timeless and endearing.

Determined to find something to remind me of this sight when I leave Athens, I found these Smart Glass earrings that resemble those lovely lighted orbs. These earrings are created from recycled glass bottles along with other necklaces, bracelets, etc.  I could not think of a better way to evoke one of my favorite Athens memories while also being eco-chic. Don’t let school get in the way of your education. Take a lesson in fashion 101:

Lakyn (21, from Brunswick, GA) is the essence of retro chic. Wearing a vintage steal comes with major responsibility, and she conquers it like a champion.
