Flea Circus

Posted: under Shopping, Street Style.

If only it was as easy to find an ATM machine or a bathroom at the Brooklyn Flea as it is to find stylish people. Actually, it’s hard not to notice all the well-dressed people while scavenging through endless amounts of vintage pieces and handmade baubles. Here are a few of my favorite looks from last Saturday:

This bodacious babe (and budding handbag designer!) caught my eye when I first walked in. Pulling off a look that’s totally fit for Aggy, she makes a denim vest adorned with knickknacks and a black slip look oh-so-cool instead of oh-so-trashy. Even more amazing, she manages to wear heels during a long day of outdoor shopping. Mad props for that.

I spotted this girl looking like a Greek goddess a few times before I got up the courage to snap a picture of her ensemble. Proving that comfort and style can coexist in one outfit, her casual yet elegant draping dress and sandals are the epitome of Greek chic, perfect for beating the heat while looking pretty as a picture.

I found these two lovely ladies while strolling through the park in search of an elusive bathroom. Their style was a mixture of 70’s fashion and modern hipster attire, which can be a very good thing in their case. Pretty cute, no?

The day ended successfully. Purchases were made, and bathroom accommodations were found (thanks to a nice coffee shop worker who took pity on me). If you can can stand the heat and have the patience to look through dozens of vendor areas, you will probably find something you like at the Brooklyn Flea. If not, you can always chow down on some of the flea’s amazing food choices, from artisan pickles to lobster rolls. Check out these pupusas… it’s like I died and went to corn cake heaven. Reason enough to visit again soon!

A taste of spring

Posted: under Street Style.

I could not resist doing another street style post with the amazing weather that we’ve had in NYC this weekend.  It appeared that the way New Yorkers’ were dressing reflected their inner joy. I think we deserve at least one day of sunshine after an unusually snowy month and what seemed like an endless streak of frigid days.

jackie

I found this bombshell looking like a breath of fresh spring air in Central Park. Even with the last remaining bits of snow behind her, she bravely brought out the sailor shirt, white blazer, acid wash jeans, and shiny oxfords (with no socks!). Her chic and playful ensemble really reflected the mood of the day, which gave us a break from stressing about winter layers in order to go out and enjoy a pleasant weekend afternoon. Okay, I lied… I do know this girl, but I couldn’t resist posting another picture of her amazing sense of style. Vanity Fair is lucky to have her as their newest employee.

chicken

I actually did find this lady by chance walking along Lorimer St. in Williamsburg and was instantly enamored with her CHICKEN PURSE. That’s right… chicken is delicious, and it can also be used to carry your cell phone and keys (just make sure the chicken is made of rubber).  The handsome fellow that was accompanying her claimed to be the one who purchased said purse. Looks like he knows how to treat a lady. In addition to the poultry bag, I enjoyed her carefree style, including ripped stockings a la Courtney Love, as she strolled along on a lazy Sunday. Let’s hope that these days continue! (reality check… they will not, but one can dream, right?)

Plaid to the bone

Posted: under Shopping, Street Style.

plaid

It’s not easy to look fashionable while the sky dumps inches of wet snow on our heads. The dreaded “wintry mix” forecast typically calls for humdrum waterproof boots and extreme puffy jackets that inevitably end up looking as dull and wet as the sky itself. I spotted this cheery girl walking near Bedford Avenue in Williamsburg last week and was immediately charmed by her vibrant ensemble in the midst of a white landscape. Instead of going the usual parka route, she was dressed in plenty of plaid with practical waterproof pieces, sort of like Braveheart meets Debbie Reynolds in Singing in the Rain. Later I found out that she is a fashion photographer who works for Market Publique. If you haven’t checked out the site yet, I highly suggest that you do. It’s a fantastically organized and diverse vintage shop online, always full of interesting treasures for vintage fanatics like myself.

dresses

Speaking of vintage shopping, I’m going to take a moment to shamelessly display these beautiful dresses that I picked up recently at a store called Odd Twin Trading Company in Park Slope. It’s a great shop that sells everything from wacky retro board games to elegant 40’s evening gowns. I can’t stop gushing about these fabrics! The one on the left is a psychedelic peacock print dress from the 70’s, and the one on the right is a coral drop waist SKORT dress from the 60’s. Now I can blend in at the zoo and ride a bike with ease.

Unfortunately these dresses must remain on hangers until spring comes and brings us some warm weather. Until then, enjoy this beautiful wintry view of Prospect Park. Perhaps snow isn’t always a bad thing after all.

They got legs, they know how to use them.

sohogirls1I can’t say enough good things about this cute group of girls spotted in SoHo.  Taking advantage of the New York weather before it gets too chilly, the group provided a great example of fall trends including eye-catching tights, metal embellished shoes, faux fur, leather bomber jackets, and lacey dresses. I love how each girl shows off her unique personality by adding her own special touch to the look, whether it be bright red tights or a classic black pea coat.

sohogirls2Polka dot tights, studded flats…. these chicks got it all.

edie3… I think this famous New York fashion lover would be proud.

On the streets for fashion week: Part Two!

Posted: under Street Style.

It’s difficult to pick an original outfit for every day of fashion week, but some people handle the task quite naturally.

fw3Take these three pretty girls for example, each looking extraordinarily hip at the Shipley & Halmos Spring 2010 presentation at Milk Studios.

fw2So what do you get when you combine a fashion publicist and two fashion designers? Lots of creativity, and a trio of amazing shoes!

fw4These girls were spotted en route to another after party in the meatpacking district. We love how fierce and upscale they both look while also being confident and approachable.  The lady on the left knows how to rock some shoulder pads and her friend pulls off tout noir like a pro.  If dressing for fashion week was a sport, these girls could be gold medal champions.

On the streets for fashion week: Part One!

Posted: under Street Style.

Beautiful and creative people filled the streets of New York during fashion week looking their best at runway shows and endless after parties. Although our heads are still spinning from the whirlwind of styles, we have chosen a few of our favorite looks for your viewing pleasure.

fw1This dynamic duo was flaunting their stuff during the G-Star Raw after party at the Bowery Hotel.  The foxy girl on the right knows how to make a killer impression in a hot pink bra top and leather booties with inverted metal heels (you go girl).  The dashing man on the left turns heads with a sleek blue blazer and contrasting pink accessories. It’s a fashion match made in heaven.

fw5These two divas also caught my eye at the G-Star Raw after party with their feminine style and vintage flair. The lovely makeup artist on the left shows off her cosmetic skills and super tan gams in a sexy black lace dress.  The lady on the right (aka singer/songwriter Darling Cait) looks fabulous in vintage gloves, a short red leather jacket, and trousers with satin stripes.  In a crowded room full of beautiful people, a little personal style goes a long way.

Buggin’ Out

bugearinggirl

I saw this fly lookin’ lady outside of the Metropolitan Museuem of Art on a warm summer day. At first glance I was attracted to her dainty skirt and frilly top, but after a closer look I found these insect earrings dangling casually on her shoulders. Although the only kind of “beatle” that I usually like is named Paul or Ringo, these little guys were pretty cool too. Her outfit is perfect for the summertime: sweet and sophisticated with just a touch of the great outdoors.

Summer Lovin’

Posted: under Street Style.

Young folks waited all week long for the Williamsburg “Pool Party” last Sunday featuring popular bands like the Black Lips, Health, and You Will Know Us By Trail of Dead.  The term “Pool Party” is a bit of a misnomer here since no pools were involved; the event is actually a huge free concert on the East River looking over Manhattan.  Although a few swimsuits still made an appearance, some of Brooklyn’s most stylish dressed to impress despite the smoldering heat and impending thunderstorm.

heartgirl

Some people wear their hearts on their sleeves, but this girl prefers to wear hers front and center.  She probably got some dude’s heart pumping in this white-hot ensemble.

girls2

I found these two girls looking adorable while sitting on concrete hot enough to fry an egg. They kept their cool in airy florals with comfortable leather flats perfect for dancing under the sun.

greygirl

I stopped to capture this girl’s chic outfit, but I was even more impressed by her sunny disposition while dark clouds loomed overhead. It’s almost as if she coordinated her outfit to the storm clouds. Now that’s dedication.

Pretty In Pink

Posted: under Street Style.

DSC04913

The hipster mecca Williamsburg located in Brooklyn is home of many beautiful and artistic people, although most of them look like moving, breathing Urban Outfitters and American Apparel ads. I was lucky to find this blond beauty (Ashlyn, 21) getting on the subway looking fly and original at 9am (what a triumph!).  Her girly hues were a stark contrast to the dreary subway surroundings.  I love her ability to mix multiple shades of pink with interesting accessories.  I also applaud her ability to stick out in a town full of indie fashion lovers. Now if only I could look so beautiful in the morning…

Paris Street Style… Ooh la la!

Posted: under Street Style, Travel.

Spotted in the Louvre

paris1

Empress Josephine, wife of the great Napoleon, is one of France’s most influential and historical style icons. She is known for her sophisticated taste in addition to bringing luxury fashion to the French economy. It’s only fitting that I would find this stylish girl in front of the painting Coronation of the Empress Josephine by Jacques-Louis David since her style mimics that of the empress.  She mixes a simple and elegant dress with some leather sandals to create a truly elegant look. Although this beautiful girl did not speak much English, she was a good sport to let me take her picture while trying to describe my website in some broken French.

Spotted at Versailles

paris2

Perhaps the best-known fashion innovator of French history is Marie Antoinette.  Her lavish and extreme style shocked the French courts and was known for driving the country into deeper dept. Once again it’s perfectly fitting that I would find this stylish girl who embodies the essence of Marie Antoinette’s bold fashion at the Hall of Mirrors in the Château de Versailles where the queen once lived.  I was impressed by her bold color scheme mixed with casual chic pieces.  This is definitely a regal look that you may lose your head for.

Spotted near L’église Saint-Eustache off Rue de Rivoli

paris3

I stopped this adorable girl on the street because her outfit was a great example of modern Parisian fashion.  To my surprise she was not Parisian, but rather a tourist like myself visiting from Los Angeles.  Either way her style was sleek and hip and I had to take her photograph and give her props for working the chic ensemble.  I’m particularly fond of the girly lace skirt and classic quilted leather purse.  She reminded me of Anna Karina, another French style icon from history. The Dutch born actress became a top model for Coco Chanel at age 18 and worked alongside many great French musicians and film directors. In the style of Madame Karina, this LA girl’s outfit has comfort, layering, and versatility. C’est magnifique!
