Oh, Steven!

I think my heart stopped when I first saw the new Louis Vuitton Fall 2010 advertising campaign. It was as if all my puffy dress, flawless ponytail, and expensive bag dreams came true in a series of perfect images. The campaign features supermodels Christy Turlington, Natalia Vodianova, and Karen Elson (my fave!) shot by fashion photography extraordinaire Steven Meisal. I don’t think there is really much more I can say about it… just feast your eyes on this!

All American Rejects

Posted: under History, Photoshoots.

Photographer David Sims shot several big name models for the May issue of Vogue in the style of six iconic American looks. The twelve page editorial entitled “The American Experience” includes classic looks like flappers wearing boas and patriots wearing camo, but some of the styling is a bit less traditional. Care for a little history lesson?

First, let’s take a look at this Gibson Girl ensemble. The early 1900’s style is usually defined by piled-high hair, a curvy “S” silhouette, and long feminine dresses, but what about these boyish briefs here on model Daria Werbowy? Even Camille Crawford would blush at that.

The other look I found rather puzzling was “Bohemian.” I know historically (as in before “boho-chic”) the style was all about being unconventional and eclectic, but in this photo model Sasha Pivovarova (wearing Marc Jacobs) seems more like a tacky geisha doll than carefree artist. On the other hand, the movement was also big on cross-cultural influences, so I guess this outfit makes sense. (But doesn’t she look like she’s wearing Fit Flops in this picture? Totally kills the vibe…)

Check out the rest of the photos from the editorial here.

Send in the clowns

The insanely funny (and attractive) actress Kristen Wiig is featured in the latest issue of V Magazine, and I couldn’t be more thrilled! With striking fashion and a sense of humor, the SNL star models some unusual styles including “Carmen Miranda Does Vegas,” “Brigette Bardot Goes Geisha,” and “Bollywood Frida Kahlo.” A woman with talent and smoking hot good looks? You definitely can’t beat that.

As you probably have noticed (unless you have been living under a 30 rock), Tina Fey is the reigning queen of comedy these days, and she’s also getting some serious attention in the world of fashion. The former SNL star ultimately proved that a woman can be funny and gorgeous when she graced the cover of the March 2010 issue of Vogue, followed by a more comical fashion spread for the April issue of Esquire. In the words of Liz Lemon, “I want to go to there.”

And just when you thought the world would go back to skinny models and bubbleheaded actresses, the sharp-tongued bombshell Chelsea Handler shows up in the latest April issue of Harper’s Bazaar along with Little Miss Sunshine. Hooray! Another triumph for female comedians!

It looks like humor is definitely in fashion this Spring, but we owe it all the TV’s original funny gal, Lucille Ball. The flaming redhead could go from silly to stunning faster than Ricky could say “Lucy, you got some ’splaining to do!” I mean, just check out that swimsuit pic… it looks like Vitameatavegamin does a body good.

Dangerously in Love

Long before Brigitte Bardot and Beyonce immortalized them with song, Bonnie and Clyde (pictured above) were two real life criminals who robbed and killed until they were finally shot down in 1934.  Their outrageous crime spree and media coverage made them instant legends, which inspired Hollywood to make a movie starring Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty in 1967 entitled Bonnie and Clyde (not to be confused with the Hillary Duff version coming out this year… weird). Photographer Peter Lindbergh re-imagined the classic film for the March issue of Harper’s Bazaar featuring model Anna Selezneva and actor Wes Bentley as the deadly duo. The editorial is spot-on to many of the film’s famous scenes (shown below), and the fashion is clearly our “most wanted.”

“Twitterpated”

No, this isn’t a new term for Twitter fans. We’re talking about falling in love Bambi style.  My inner child was doing cartwheels when I saw Stella McCartney’s F/W 09.10 ad campaign featuring the world’s most famous deer and a few of his furry friends.  Shot by Ryan McGinley, these ads are a fanciful mix of wildlife and fierce fashions from one of our favorite designers.  “I’m a huge Bambi fan, and the film reminds me of my mum,” Stella told WWD. Although Bambi would probably object, you probably can’t avoid being a bit “twitterpated” and nostalgic with this fun campaign.
