A long time ago in a shoe closet far, far away…

Posted: under Collaboration, Movies.

I’ve been meaning to post these for awhile, but I always say it’s better late than never.  Please sit back and allow your inner-child to be enamored with the newest Star Wars Collaboration for Fall/Winter 2010 created by the branding geniuses at Adidas Originals. Just think about it, you could be the coolest kid at Comicon with these fly kicks. And the best part? Now I can finally attract Star Wars nerds without having to whip out the old golden bikini! Time to cross that one off on my to-do list.

Han Solo… in carbonite!

Wookiee jacket, which I can only hope I will be rocking come wintertime.

PS. Whoever styled the shoes with the backgrounds, I LOVE YOU.

Fight the power in some old school threads

Posted: under Movies.

Lately I’ve been spending a great deal of my time sitting in Brooklyn and trying to avoid the heat, so naturally I decided to watch the classic Spike Lee joint Do the Right Thing, which is a movie about sitting in Brooklyn and trying to avoid the heat. Although it was made in 1989, many parts of the film are comparable to the Brooklyn I know today (pizzerias, crappy air conditioning, Asian grocery stores), but the thing that stuck out to me the most was the crazy fashion. The styles are strikingly familiar to what I see today on the streets of Williamsburg, from bright spandex shorts to seersucker jackets.  Let’s take a look at some characters from the movie and where you can find their fabulous 80’s looks today.

Example #1: Knuckle rings.

Here’s a picture of Radio Raheem, the Public Enemy-loving giant that carries his boom box around like it’s his job. I love his bling! Check out some more updated and chic versions below.

Brass knuckles skeleton key ring, $12, available at Fred Flare; Alexander McQueen knuckle duster ring, $550, available at Saks Fifth Avenue

Example #2: Seersucker jackets and boat hats.

This is the neighborhood’s crazy drunk otherwise known as “Da Mayor.” Perhaps if he cleaned up a bit he could pull off the preppy hipster look. You can find these derby-worthy pieces at plenty of upscale men’s stores.

Michael Kors seersucker blazer, $443, available at Neiman Marcus; Straw dye trilby hat, Paul Smith, $95, available at Bloomingdale’s.

Example #3: Brightly colored 80’s shirts.

These neighborhood kids look like they are waiting in line for a MGMT concert. It’s obviously not hard to find their look at thrift stores and American Apparel.

Viscose sexuali-tank, $24, available at American Apparel; Striped jersey t-shirt, $28, available at American Apparel

Example #4: Linen shirts and loafers.

“Sweet Dick Willy” and his gang of old sweaty dudes might just be the most stylish folks on the block. Their linen shirts and loafers are classic summer staples.

Slim fit linen short-sleeve shirt, $39.99, available at Gap; Krahn loafers, $75, available at Aldo

Example #5: Colorful sundresses and floppy hats.

This one is my favorite. Behold the beautiful Jade, the real life/on-screen sister of director/actor Spike Lee. She looks like she could have popped right out of an Urban Outfitters summer catalog, don’t cha think?

Kimchi Blue watercolor dress, $29.99, available at Urban Outfitters; Merona floppy hat, $12.99, available at Target

Whether you dig these looks or not, I highly recommend that you watch Do the Right Thing, especially if you love Samuel L. Jackson, enjoy racially-charged dramas, or have any experience with the sweltering New York City summer heat.

The stylish (but just as delightfully creepy) side of Tim Burton

For years director Tim Burton has been captivating audiences with movies that mix dreams, nightmares, and all the kooky things in-between.  From Sweeney Todd to Pee-wee’s Big Adventure, the outrageously creative director has given us some of pop-culture’s most memorable character looks. Although we love him for his humorously grotesque characters (Jack Skellington! Beetlejuice!), we also adore the director’s beautiful and surreal characters, like James and the Giant Peach. His latest film Alice in Wonderland, which opens today, is guaranteed to be just as visually stimulating as the rest. Academy Award winner Colleen Atwood designed the costumes for the film with the intention of moving away from the cutesy Alice costumes that we know from our youth and adding some of Burton’s signature elements.

Quite a change from this drawing of Alice and the Red Queen from Lewis Carroll’s original story Alice’s Adventures Underground:

In honor of the eccentric director’s latest film, let’s take a look back at some unforgettable costumes from Burton’s past cinematic masterpieces:

burton1Johnny Depp is a cut above the rest in Edward Scissorhands (1990); Actress Lisa Marie is out of this world in Mars Attacks!(1996)

burton2In Beetlejuice (1988), Michael Keaton makes you say his name; In Ed Wood (1994), Johnny Depp shows off his more feminine side

burton3Johnny Depp struts his stuff in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005); Michelle Pfeiffer looks purrfect in Batman Returns (1992)

Visit the Tim Burton exhibit going on at MOMA until April 26th to see a few of these costumes along with hundreds of props and sketches from his exciting career.

Golden Girls

Posted: under Fashion Formula, Movies, Television.

Poor celebrities. If they didn’t have it rough enough making millions of dollars and dating each other, they must succumb to our piercing judgment during award shows. Some come out on top, while others become the object of never-ending ridicule for us media junkies. Now that our post award show buzz has finally worn off, we can assess what we really saw during the 2010 Golden Globes. Here it is: the good, the bad, and the totally bizarre.

One the twelth day of Christmas my true love gave to me…

Posted: under Designer, Holiday, Movies.

… two fashion loaded movies.

After you’re done opening presents and stuffing your face this week, check out these stylish films in theaters Christmas Day.

A Single Man

Famed designer Tom Ford makes his directorial debut in style along with a production team from Mad Men- need we say more?  Your eyes will be delighted with Ford’s bold imagery and sixties era costumes, but the story based on Christopher Ishwerwood’s 1964 novel about a man who loses his life partner will pluck hard on those heart strings.  Be sure to bring an extra hanky.

Nine

The director of Chicago is back with a new star-studded musical about an Italian film director going through a mid-life crisis as he struggles to create a new work and balance the many women in his life.  Check out stars like Nicole Kidman, Kate Hudson, Penelope Cruz, and Marion Cotillard sing and dance their hearts out in everything from shimmering gowns to sultry lingerie numbers. Ciao bella!

Still looking for some last-minute gift ideas? Naturally we suggest giving a fabulous flick to the fashion lover in your life. Here are a few suggestions to get you started….

  • Funny Face- Audrey Hepburn plays a fashion model in 50’s Paris… ’nuff said.
  • The Seven Year Itch- Marilyn faces the wind in her iconic white dress.
  • The Devil Wears Prada- Anne Hathaway lives the dream/nightmare of every young fashionista.
  • High Society- Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, and Grace Kelly sing and dance in the height of style.
  • Marie Antoinette- Sofia Coppola’s dazzling piece about history’s most famous victim of fashion.
  • Annie Hall- How Diane Keaton made menswear look cool.
  • Breakfast at Tiffany’s- Pretty sure this needs no explanation.
  • Clueless- A true time capsule of 90’s fashion… good, bad, but always amusing.
  • Les Parapluies de Cherbourg- Catherine Deneuve looks chic as can be singing with an umbrella.
  • My Fair Lady- The only thing that can distract from the jaw-dropping costumes is perhaps Audrey Hepburn’s Cockney accent in the film.

Mirror, mirror, on the wall….

thakoonsnow white mirror

… who is the fairest of them all? No, not the queen, and not even a a fair skinned beauty with hair as black as ebony. Looks like  Thakoon’s dazzling mosaic disco heels is the vamp victor. So when winter gets bland, jazz up your night with these shiny show stoppers. Oh, and the prince? Well, that is in the bag, but don’t say we didn’t warn you: wearing these might attract 7+ drooling dwarfs. How do ya like them poisonous apples?

Schmatta: Rags to Riches to Rags

Posted: under Fashion News, Historical, Movies.

First, there was “Valentino: The Last Emperor,” now, “The September Issue” — clearly, fashion documentaries are the vogue thing to do. Next to follow this trend is HBO,  who is presenting Marc Levins’s documentary “Schmatta: Rags to Riches to Rags” that shows the gritty side of glam by going behind-the-scenes of New York City’s garment district. (“Schmatta” is Yiddish for rags.)

Starting with the history of the neighborhood, the documentary traces New York City’s rag trade from it’s boomtown past to the present. What was once the heart and soul of the fashion industry for many decades, is now in danger of disappearing.
According to Levin, ”‘Fashion, and the culture of consumption, and shopping have been so much a part of who we are that this will hopefully be a way of looking in the mirror and reevalutating, ‘How do we look?’”

garment-center

Premiering today in Toronto, “Schmatta” will air Oct. 19 on HBO.
